Making sure your fish are happy and healthy involves more than simply filling
a tank with water and calling it a day. To make sure your fish thrive
in their new home, it is crucial to maintain the pH level the tank in
a manner that is appropriate for your fish.
What is the pH Level?
The Ph level refers to the acidity levels of your aquarium. Low levels
mean your tank is highly acidic, whereas a high level means it is more
alkaline. Generally, the optimal level for most freshwater fish is somewhere
between 5.5 and 7.5, though it is best to do research for the specific
fish you plan on purchasing to maintain it at a level that is suitable
for their unique needs.
Raising or Lowering the pH Level
After finding out the preferences of your particular fish, if you decide
that changes must be made to the pH levels of your tank, there are a few
natural methods you can use to raise or lower the levels. This includes:
Changing the water: Water that is not changed often will have a lower pH level than tap water.
If your fish are comfortable with the levels found in tap water, change
the water of your aquarium to raise the levels.
Rocks or substrate: Another natural way to raise the levels in your aquarium is by simply
adding some rocks. Crushed coral is commonly used as a substrate, but
limestone and petrified coral are also effective.
Driftwood: If you want to lower the levels in your tank, add a piece of natural driftwood.
Driftwood acts as a natural filter for the water, eliminating contaminants
to lower the pH levels. Be careful with what type you choose though since
some driftwood can contain chemicals that are dangerous for fish.
Reverse osmosis filter: There are also artificial solutions to lowering the pH levels in your tank.
A reverse osmosis system uses a specialized partially permeable filter
that can remove most contaminants from water. However, the system can
be large and bulky, so if your aquarium is not large, you might want to
try another option.
