You might believe you know everything there is to know about keeping fish
and an aquarium, but that’s probably not the case. At Living Art
Aquatic Design, Inc., we have put together some common aquarium mistakes
that many people make.
Here are the top 10:
We have told our customers time and time again that adding too much fish
in a tank or a bowl that is far too small to occupy the fish will inevitably
result in all of them dying. To live a happy and healthy life, the fish
need enough space to swim around.
Another common mistake is overfeeding. Fish do not always start and stop
eating based on their hunger levels. If you give them more food than they
can reasonably eat, they won’t stop eating it. Rather, they will
overeat, which will cause them to bloat; and bloating can ultimately lead to death.
Fresh water fish need fresh water to survive, and if their tank is left
with little to no filtration whatsoever, they are likely to develop a
disease and die. Thus, filtration is necessary for the fish to survive.
We would like to stress the fact that you should do a significant amount
of research before placing multiple fish in the same tank. When fish don’t
get along with each other, they can end up fighting for ground and even
killing or injuring one another.
The process of quarantining the fish before adding them to the official
tank is one of the most important tasks, and doing so will ensure the
healthy life of your fish.
6. pH Level
Different fish have different pH levels. The temperature, as well as the
water chemistry, play a huge role in the health of the fish.
7. Cycling the Tank
Many people do not cycle their fish tanks, even though it is extremely
important to do so. Ammonia buildup can be very dangerous to the fish
inside the tank. It is also next to impossible to get rid of ammonia once
and for all, so it’s important that you cycle the tank regularly.
Even though it is extremely important that you clean the tank regularly,
scrubbing it with dish washing liquid or soap or any such detergents can
actually cause great harm to the fish. Avoid using these products when
cleaning the fish tank.
9. Fish Feed
Feeding fish the same food every day is not a good option; and it’s
a common mistake made by many. Add variety to their food by buying fish
feed that has a good amount of nutrients.
Just like all other pets, fish need significant time, attention and care
as well. Give your water pets enough time to know when you see anything
that’s suspicious or out of the ordinary so you can treat it immediately.
